Every now and then, a wedding reminds me just how much joy can come from unexpected turns. Nicole and Adrian’s day was one of those — beautiful, emotional, and full of heart… even though it very nearly didn’t happen the way they’d planned.

Their original venue had to cancel late in the game due to a double booking. It was a stressful time for them — anyone who’s tried to rebook a wedding venue close to the date knows how hard that can be. Thankfully, they found a stunning plan B that ended up feeling more like plan A+.

They landed on a venue with elegant gardens, a peaceful setting, and a beautifully styled reception room that genuinely took their breath away when they saw it. They told me it had turned out even better than they imagined. And after photographing the day from start to finish, I can absolutely see why.

A Sunny Start (With a Backup Pair of Shoes)

The morning began in the bridal suite, where Nicole was getting ready. Like a lot of brides, she felt the weight of the day a little — and her wedding shoes didn’t help, squeezing her left foot uncomfortably. But she came prepared with a second, comfier pair (something I always recommend in this tip about wedding planning). That simple swap brought instant relief and let her focus on the moments that mattered.

Outdoor “I Do’s” in the Sunken Garden

The ceremony took place outdoors in the sunken garden of Moor Hall, framed by trees and warm summer sun. It was one of those quiet, postcard-perfect moments where you forget the stress that came before it. The couple were surrounded by close family and friends, and there was such a peaceful, joyful atmosphere throughout.

Laughter, Tears, and One Brilliant Speech

The speeches later in the day were a highlight. One in particular had the whole room laughing before pulling at everyone’s heartstrings. The speaker joked about Adrian falling for Nicole after thinking she was a “working girl” — a funny misunderstanding that led into the truth: she’s not just classy and quick-witted, but also a miracle worker. A brilliant mum. A calm, steady presence who brings love and order wherever she goes.

He went on to describe Adrian as one of the most loyal friends a person could have — someone who gathers people naturally throughout his life just by being himself. It was the kind of tribute that makes you stop and really feel the weight of a relationship. Laughter rolled into tears, and I could see how much these two meant to everyone in the room.

A Quiet Ending to a Joyful Day

Later that evening, as the music picked up and the day moved into celebration mode with the first dance and guests dancing on the dance floor, I took Nicole and Adrian back into the garden for a few portraits.. It was still warm inside and buzzing with activity, so this gave them a quiet moment to breathe, reconnect, and enjoy a few minutes to themselves.

That’s one of my favourite ways to end a wedding — not with stiff posing, but with some quiet time as a couple. I stood back, gave them space, and captured those moments from a distance. No pressure. No performance. Just the two of them enjoying their first married evening in peace.

A Wedding Saved — And Made Even Better

It’s hard to believe this day almost didn’t happen the way it did. But sometimes, the detours make the destination all the more meaningful. Nicole and Adrian rolled with the changes, trusted each other, and embraced what the day became.

And in the end, what they created was something so full of love, laughter, and elegance — the kind of day that proves plan B can sometimes be the best plan after all.

FAQ

What should we do if our wedding venue cancels last-minute?

Stay calm — Nicole & Adrian’s story is proof that plan B can turn into something even more meaningful. Start by contacting vendors for flexibility, and lean on your planner or photographer for support. Often, creative solutions lead to beautiful surprises.

Can a last-minute venue change still result in a beautiful wedding?

Absolutely. Nicole & Adrian’s garden wedding happened because of a cancellation, and it turned out better than they imagined — elegant, joyful, and full of heart.

How do you photograph emotional moments without making them feel staged?

I use a relaxed, documentary-style approach — no pressure or posing. That way, moments unfold naturally, and couples feel comfortable enough to be themselves.

Is it possible to get quiet, intimate portraits on a busy wedding day?

Definitely. I often take couples aside in the evening for a few quiet minutes away from the crowd. It’s a beautiful way to end the day and get genuine, peaceful portraits.

What if I’m not sure what kind of wedding I want yet?

That’s totally normal. I’m always happy to have a pressure-free chat about ideas, timelines, and how to make the photography side feel relaxed and easy — even if you’re still figuring things out.
