The Old Library, as it’s name suggests, is a refurbished Victoria library near the Custard Factory in Birmingham. What I love about this venue is the light and airy feel it has inside because of it’s white walls and wide open spaces. It made for a beautiful backdrop for Katy and Rob’s wedding celebrations.

I love this venue so much It’s now listed amongst my list of Best Wedding Venues in the West Midlands.

What drew them to this venue too was the fact it was situated near the Custard Factory. If you don’t know the area you’re in for a treat when you visit. All around there’s bit’s of graffiti, wall art etc, to identify this as Birmingham’s creative quarter.

Understandably, Rob and Katy wanted the art to feature heavily in their wedding photos. So when we went for our informal walk-about photo session, we had a great time looking for different bits of street art to use as colourful backdrops for their photos.

Their Wedding Day

We started the day with me joining Katy during her bridal preps at a Hotel La Tour nearby. As soon as I saw her Irregular Choice wedding shoes, I knew I was in for a fun Old Library wedding!!

As always, a documentary approach was the best way to photograph the morning. to allow people just to be themselves, while I told the story of their day as it unfolded. So from the moment Katy’s father saw her in her dress for the first time, through to her mother shedding a tear during the ceremony. I was there to watch, and respectfully capture those tender moments.

After getting ahead of Katy, I met up with Rob and the lads just before the ceremony at The Old Library to photograph his final preparations and greeting of guests. Again their laid back and relaxed manner suited the documentary fly-on-the-wall approach.

There’s so much to love about this Old Library Wedding celebration. There’s the whole styling, the naturalness, the fun and quirkiness throughout the day.

Their Old Library Wedding Story in Their Words

BEFORE THE WEDDING

How You Met: We were in the same class at Middle school from the age of 9 but started seeing each other in sixth form.

How He Proposed: At the top of The Shard on our ten year anniversary.

WEDDING

Katy Wore: A Mori Lee dress found at the National Wedding Show in Birmingham with the help of mum and bridesmaids. With shoes from Irregular Choice.

Rob Wore: Suit from Slaters in Birmingham with a yellow tie and matching socks. Shoes from Office.

Jewellery/Accessories: Just a veil.

Hair/Make-up Done: By the brides sister and maid of honour Laura Mitford.

Flowers: Lavender in Penkridge made the beautiful bouquets. Centrepieces were put together by the bride, mother of the bride and our good friend Julian.

Invites: We designed our own invitations and printed them via Vistaprint.

Ceremony Venue: The Old Library at the Custard Factory.

Wedding Theme/Style: Colourful and summery.

RECEPTION

Venue: The Old Library at the Custard Factory.

First Dance Song: Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks. Performed by our wedding band, The Spooks.

Cake: Three giant French fancies in pastel shades. Two were vanilla sponge and one was chocolate. They were made by Katys talented cousin Helen, aka Cakey Bakey.

Colours: Yellow, mint, lilac, hot pink and dark purple.

Decor Elements: Five gigantic balloons in our wedding colours, m&m dispensers and pompom garlands made from 300 handmade pompoms

Unique Details: Customised badges and fortune cookies.

MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT

Katy’s Answer: Finding out Rob had cut his ring finger so badly that it had swollen up and having to put his wedding ring on his right hand instead! I loved the evening disco and dancing the night away with the people I love.

Rob’s Answer: Seeing Katy walk down the aisle. She looked so beautiful!

HONEYMOON

Place: Driving tour of France. Highlights were Disneyland Paris, the Loire valley and the Camembert museum.

FINAL WORDS

Wedding Advice: Everybody will tell you to take some time to yourselves and take a step back for a second to appreciate everything, but we didn’t have chance! Just try and enjoy the best day of your life.
