“We are simply over the moon with them! Watching them through was like reliving the day all over again — we loved it!” — Ruth & Dan
Some weddings just stay with you. Not because of grand gestures or elaborate styling — but because of the quiet, personal touches that speak volumes about a couple’s love for each other and for the people around them.
That was very much the case with Ruth and Dan’s late September celebration. I could feel how thoughtful and intentional the day was. Everything — from their guest letters to their choice of florals — reflected care, connection, and meaning.
An Intimate Start to the Day
Morning prep began with the usual excitement and energy as Ruth got ready with her bridesmaids and her sons joined in later. Dan was just upstairs in the honeymoon suite with his best man and ushers, so I was able to quietly drift between the two preparations and capture both perspectives. These early moments — full of anticipation, laughter, and a few nerves — always set the tone for the rest of the day.
Heather chose to practice walking down the aisle with her bridesmaids, which made for an additional story to document for the day. Full of silly laughter and fun.
A Ceremony with Heart (and a House Full of Kids!)
With all four boys taking part in the day, it was a lovely blend of family warmth and playful energy. Dan’s two sons and Ruth’s two boys brought such personality to the occasion — and they were clearly a priority for the couple’s documentary coverage. I made sure to capture them naturally throughout the day: laughing with guests, supporting the couple, and even sneaking a few hugs.
A Relaxed, Story-Led Celebration
After a small set of formal group photos (which we kept quick and simple), Ruth and Dan were free to spend time with their guests — just as they’d hoped. The garden games were a hit, with guests getting surprisingly competitive over giant Jenga, Connect 4 and the cricket match they played on the lawn area! It was a joy to photograph all the interactions and little expressions that told the real story of their day.
That Beautiful Guest Letter Moment
This was something truly unique. Instead of traditional place cards, Ruth and Dan wrote personal letters to each of their guests. While they stepped away to freshen up, guests arrived at their tables to find these handwritten notes waiting for them.
It was an incredibly emotional moment. I was quietly moving through the room, camera in hand, as the first guests opened their letters. The reactions were immediate — surprise, laughter, and even a few tears. It was one of the most touching things I’ve had the privilege to photograph, and I’m so glad they trusted me to document it.
The look of surprise as guests realised what Ruth and Dan had done — followed by heartfelt tears — made this such a powerful reminder of what weddings are really about.
Even the speeches brough more tears as they remembered those missing from the day’s celebrations.
A Party to Remember
As the band started up and the lights went down, the party really got going. From heartfelt speeches to full-on dance floor energy, it was clear everyone was there to celebrate a couple deeply loved by all.
Eco-Friendly Touches That Deserve a Mention
Ruth and Dan made a conscious effort to keep their day more sustainable:
- Foliage and Faux provided beautiful faux florals for table and venue styling
- Gouldberry created seasonal British bouquets, grown locally on her allotment
Subtle choices like this can make a big difference, and it was great to see their ethos reflected in the day.
